As the NZTA Alcohol Interlock Programme Guide explains, the programme requires an alcohol interlock device to be installed in your vehicle before you can be issued an interlock licence. The system prevents the engine from starting until you provide a clean breath sample. During everyday driving, you may be asked for a few random retests to confirm you remain alcohol free.
Smart Start specialises in interlock technology only. This focus means you receive clear guidance at every step, including what documents to bring to your installation appointment, how servicing works and how the data is securely sent to NZTA. The team understands that most people feel anxious or overwhelmed during this period, and they aim to make the process as simple and respectful as possible.
Many drivers want to know the cost of an alcohol interlock before they book the installation and choose where to get an interlock installed. Our monthly leases start from $149 per month, and they cover more than just the device, it includes a warranty for theft or faults, as well as your required monthly calibration and servicing.
A standard installation costs $199, and removal at the end of the programme is $149. If you qualify for the NZTA subsidy page, these two costs are FREE. The subsidy covers your alcohol licence fees, interlock installation, interlock removal, and contributes $50 per month toward your monthly lease.
Unsure if you qualify? Smart Start can help you check your eligibility and apply for the subsidy. For many people, the subsidy removes the financial pressure and speeds up the process of getting legally back on the road.
At your appointment, the authorised alcohol interlock installer fits the interlock device neatly into your vehicle and guides you through each step. You will practise giving a breath sample, see how the screen prompts work and learn how to manage random retests while staying safe at intersections or carparks. The process is hands-on and practical, so you feel comfortable before leaving the workshop.
Servicing appointments are usually quick. The technician downloads your data, checks the handset and confirms the device is functioning correctly. These regular checks are required by NZTA and help ensure your programme runs smoothly.

How the Interlock Device Works
Wondering how interlocks work? They are wired into your ignition system and prevent your vehicle from starting until you provide a clean breath test sample through the personal breathalyser device from Smart Start. Random retests will occur during your drive.
These devices prevent thousands of drink drive incidents every year and are related to driving offences that involve alcohol consumption. If your standard driver's licence has been cancelled because of an incident like this, you will need the Alcohol Interlock Licence and must participate in the Alcohol Interlock Programme for 12 months before you can reclaim the licence.
Voluntary Alcohol Interlock Device Use
You don’t need a court order to use our interlocks. You can apply for an alcohol interlock voluntarily. We also install Smart Start voluntary interlock devices for employers, friends & family, and safety-conscious drivers who want extra peace of mind or accountability.
You just need to attend a driver licensing agent to apply for an interlock license after your court-ordered disqualification period has come to an end (typically after 28 days).
Take your DL8 form to the licensing agent and then get in touch with an approved interlock provider like Smart Start Interlocks - we’ve got more than 80 centres across the nation.
A few things will happen in a scenario where the device detects alcohol above a pre-set limit. If the interlock detects alcohol, your vehicle will not start. It will also record the alcohol readings and any violations. It'll also initiate a lock-out period, and you will need to wait for this to end.
You will have to breathe into the alcohol interlock before attempting to start your vehicle. If your alcohol interlock device detects alcohol on your breath, your vehicle will not start.
There are also rolling retests to consider. These are random interlock tests that happen when you are using the vehicle.
