One of the most misunderstood steps comes after the interlock period ends. Completing 12 months with an interlock does not automatically qualify for your next licence (zero alcohol licence).
Once you’ve had your final interlock service, you must apply for your Zero Alcohol Licence. NZTA will review your data and, once they give you approval, you need to get your zero alcohol licence from a licensing agency. You must have your zero alcohol licence in hand before you can book your interlock removal. Your zero alcohol licence is held for three years. Please note that during this period, any alcohol detected while driving would have serious consequences.

These sentences also apply to drivers who have a high breath or alcohol reading, with the breath reading exceeding 800 mcg/L and or the blood alcohol reading going above 160 mg/100mL.
This kind of licence means you'll only be able to drive a vehicle that has had an approved alcohol interlock device installed following the 28-day disqualification period.
And for the next 12 months, you will not be able to drive another type of vehicle, or you risk being charged with driving during disqualification.
